This type of audio book enhances hugely how we can interact with books because they are real books which we can really hear using the audio pen (that is, they are made of paper - they are not CDs which have a book recorded into them).
This is why we call the books "SpeaKit" books - from combining the two words "Speak" and "Kit".
SpeaKit books are particularly suited to helping children to learn because hearing the content and interacting with the exercises posed by the books stimulate more brain function than do standard books or other types of audio books, such as those on CDs. Adults too find the books very helpful in areas such as language-learning, for menus and maps, medical learning, and much more.
Children also have great fun playing with, and using, the do-it-yourself stickers, called SpeaKers. With these stickers children can record their own messages, stories, flash cards, and many other creative communication items.
The audio pen is required to bring out the sound in the books but once purchased it can be used with any SpeaKit book.
Audio books and audio pens can be purchased online or from our network of resellers. The files for the audio books can be downloaded from this website to your computer and then copied from your computer into the audio pen (via USB).
The technology to provide audio straight from the pages of books is optically driven and quite complex. Each page has an invisible layer which holds all the positional details of the items on the page. When the page is touched by the audio pen the details at that point are read by the pen which then uses this information to choose the correct audio to output through the built-in speakers.
